Interview about spanking erotica with Spanked contributor Teresa Noelle Roberts

This is the first in a series of interviews I’ll be posting here with contributors to Spanked: Red-Cheeked Erotica. I love hearing about the inspiration behind people’s writing, and I hope this gives you some insight as well as makes you want to read these crazy-hot stories. At the bottom (ha!) is a short excerpt from Teresa’s story “Daddy’s Girl,” which is one of my hands-down favorites in the book. In other words, I truly think this story alone is worth the price of Spanked. I’ve read it so many times and it makes me incredibly horny each time (and that really is a tough task when you’ve read and written as much erotica as I have!). For anyone like me who may have thought they were jaded when it comes to spanking erotica (or is just a natural pervert), this story (and interview’s) for you!

Tell us a little about yourself that’s not in your official bio.

It probably won’t surprise anyone who’s read my stories to hear that my picture isn’t found in the dictionary next to the words vanilla or white bread.

It may come as a surprise to hear that vanilla and white bread are two of my favorite substances. I’m quite domestic. When the writing’s not going well, I clear my mind by baking and cooking like a crazed 50s housewife. Thank goodness I also like bellydance and yoga, or mid-book slump would lead to mid-section slump from all that baking.

What inspired your story in Spanked?

Honestly? I’ve written quite a few spanking stories and wanted to find a slightly different take. I decided it would be fun to involve some form of roleplay. Then I thought I’d like to explore Daddy/girl roleplay precisely because it’s something outside my personal experience and I wanted to understand it better.

Your story “Daddy’s Girl” is one of my favorite spanking stories ever, mainly because I never would’ve thought I’d be into that kind of story, but you told it so well, getting into the roleplay but also stepping back out of the roleplay. Is this your first Daddy/girl story? Were there any special considerations when dealing with the subject matter?

Wow! Thank you so much, Rachel! That’s quite a compliment, especially coming from you.

I’d call this my first successful Daddy/girl story; I have one abortive attempt languishing in my files. I chose the Daddy/girl relationship because I like to try to understand other people’s kinks and erotic fascinations, and to challenge my own writing comfort zone. (I wrote a story for Rubber Sex for much the same reason and it was a great experience.) At the time I was writing the story, I’d gotten to know a few people online who enjoyed Daddy/girl roleplay or were in more or less full-time Daddy/girl relationships and I was endeavoring to get inside their emotional worlds a bit. I don’t want to claim any kind of universality for the motives in this story, by the way, but they work for these characters!

Daddy/girl, and ageplay in general, is tricky territory to write about because it can be uncomfortable for people who aren’t involved with it, can conjure up horrible thoughts of child abuse even though it’s between consenting non-related adults. The challenge of this story was keeping a little dangerous edge—the sense that they’re playing with taboos—while making it clear that we’re talking about two grown-ups in love enjoying an edgy, but tender game.

You delve into the psychological aspect of their spanking roleplaying, and write, “We’re not following the script anymore, the script that keeps my fantasies safe. But even though my head’s in a bit of an uproar, I’m still wet and still eager to have Mike—Daddy, I mean—paddle my ass.” I thought that was so fascinating, that even though Kaitlyn know it’s a game, she has to get swept up in it in order to enjoy it. How much of erotic storytelling, for you, is about the psychological element?

The psychological aspect is tremendously important in erotic storytelling for me because it’s tremendously important in good sex. The brain’s the largest sex organ, in my opinion, and arousal is at least as much about our mental and emotional reactions are our physical ones. This seems even more true when you’re exploring D/s to any degree—and while spanking can be just about intense sensation, my spanking stories tend to have a strong element of dominance and surrender. Getting caned is hot (oh, did I just out myself?) for all sorts of complex reasons having to do with intense sensation and also surrender and fantasy and fear and trust. Being smacked by an errant twig when you’re walking in the woods feels about the same, but it’s not fun at all.

Why do you enjoy writing spanking erotica? Is there anything different for you about writing spanking erotica vs. other kinds of erotica?

I love writing spanking stories in part because spanking has the potential to combine power exchange, playfulness, and the pain/pleasure dynamic in ways that unveil interesting things about the characters.

That sounds intelligent and writerly, but the other reason I love spanking stories is that getting spanked makes me incredibly hot. There’s nothing quite so amusing as getting paid to spin elaborate fantasies about something that I fantasize about anyway. And of course there’s the research…

That said, my spanking stories, like all my erotic tales, are fiction. My own obsessions and experiences may inspire some stories more than others, but the better, deeper stories are generally those where I take an idea and run with it, creating something removed from my reality.

As a reader, do you have a favorite spanking erotica story?

It depends so much on my mood. Sometimes I want something playful and light-hearted; sometimes I crave an edgier story with a stronger element of power exchange and some harsher play mixed in. (Can you tell I’m avoiding picking favorites because I don’t want to accidentally leave anyone out?) I can say I prefer stories where spanking’s not a punishment. Not that there’s anything wrong with that twist, in real life or fiction, if it works for the people involved, but I’d rather see spanking in a more pleasurable context. For me, it’s a reward, not a punishment!

What’s next for you?

I’m wrapping up an erotic urban fantasy, starting a new novel with my co-author (as Sophie Mouette), and looking forward to the release of a couple of erotic-romance novels from e-publisher Phaze Books. The next one, Pirate’s Booty, releases August 18 and—surprise!—features spanking and bondage. My co-authored alter ego, Sophie Mouette, has a novella in your collection Bedding Down, which we’re very excited about. And I have short stories forthcoming in so many erotica anthologies I can hardly keep track of them.

An excerpt from “Daddy’s Girl” by Teresa a Noelle Roberts from Spanked: Red-Cheeked Erotica.

“You’re right about Tom Clancy,” he admits. “But if you want to read about erotic spanking, let me find you something better. I doubt this author has been spanked since she was six years old and got caught stealing cookies.”

God, what am I supposed to say to that? He’s so not playing by the rules, so not acting like a proper Daddy, and I can’t keep up. And I actually thought she’d done a pretty good job with the spanking scene, so that’s pissing me off a little.
I thought my face was burning before, but he’s thrown napalm on it. And apparently some of it got into my panties, because things are on fire down there. I finally manage to spit out, “That’s gross.”

“You’re reading that tripe and you’re talking to me about gross?”

Tripe? Who the hell actually says that anymore? I almost ask him that, but his nearness, the smell of his cologne, the throbbing between my legs, all conspire to tie my tongue.

And that gives him enough time to make his move.

One hand brings the offending trade paperback down on my butt with a surprisingly firm thud. The other grabs my ponytail, uses it to propel me forward.

He forces my mouth against his. I keep my lips firmly shut.

He keeps smacking me with the book as he kisses me.

I fight it for as long as I can—fight the seductive stinging against my ass, fight the mixture of arousal and alarm flooding me. Finally, my lips open, and I melt against him and let him plunder my mouth. He’s hard against my bare thigh, and that’s killing me. I want to rub myself against it, but that’s just not what a girl does to her Daddy.

“I think,” Daddy says, “that you need to punished—to know what a proper spanking feels like so you’ll know when you’re reading bad porn. Don’t you agree, Cherise?”
