Great review at Clean Sheets

September 3, 2008

Spanked got a great review by Julian Robinson at Cleansheets:

Editrix extraordinaire Rachel Kramer Bussell has rounded up twenty brisk and stinging tales that reveal the many sides of spanking, from playful erotic accent to punishing payback for a long ago wrong. Smoothly blended technique tips and how-to hints are a bonus for those looking to enhance their spanking life. Rick Roberts’ lead-off “Spanking You” boldly wanders from the buttocks to belabor the thighs, breasts, and pussy of his eager subject. Alison Tyler’s “Betty Crocker Gone Bad” begins with one of the sexiest garments of all: an apron worn by a woman wearing nothing else, and proceeds through creatively perverse applications of common cooking tools. (Do you know anyone whose kitchen walls display multiple wooden breadboards with hefty handles and whose utensil bins contain an excess number of large wooden spoons? Do they color uncontrollably at the word “spatula”? Ah hah! You’ve found a spanko.) There’s an old-time spanking game in Donna George Storey’s “A Rare Find,” in which coin flips determine who gets it, whether bare, with what, and how hard…

Aforesaid by-the-book chastisement occurs in the volume’s most elegantly literary offering, Shanna Germain’s “Perfect Bound.” A model of Victorian propriety, her erotic bookstore owner dresses like Harriet Marwood and offers a work-for-spanks program to trembling young men who dream of her firm hand raining down upon their virgin nether cheeks: “I can tell by the way they move their eyes toward me, then away, like I’m just another book on the shelf. I’ve seen boys look at porn with the same denial of fervor.” Germain’s droll, witty style harmonizes perfectly with her heroine, who has an unusual fetish for typewriter ribbon (please Google it if this is an unfamiliar term).

“Through a Glass, Sharply” by Elizabeth Coldwell employs equally elegant terse British understatement to an account of a spanking husband and wife who confound stereotypes: she’s a petite femme disciplinarian and he’s her macho testosterone-loaded bad boy. “I know it won’t be too long before he gives me another excuse to have him like this, his bottom rosy and tender from the impact of my slaps.”

Spanking interview with me at ERWA

August 31, 2008

Over at the Erotica Readers & Writers Association (THE website for anyone looking to write or read erotica), Ashley Lister interviewed me about Spanked and my writing process/motivations:

Ashley Lister: Denise is an archetypical Rachel Kramer Bussel heroine in that she is self-aware and relates the story to the reader with layers of complex introspection that juxtapose cleverly against the physical aspect of the narrative. (I’m thinking archetypical here in the same mould as your unnamed heroine from Doing the Dishes, Best Women’s Erotica 04 and Mammoth Best New Erotica 4, and Marianne from Tight Squeeze in Rubber Sex). Why do you place such a strong emphasis on the psychological element of your characters?

Rachel: That’s an interesting question, one I’ve never really pondered before. Well, I think for one thing, dialogue is not my strong suit, so most of my stories are in the first person because that’s the easiest way for me to get inside the characters’ heads, and to tell the story.

But beyond that, I think at a very primal level, it’s the psychology of both my lovers and characters in stories that turns me on. The fastest way to rope me in is to share something truly intimate, and when you do it in a story, I think it creates this bond with the reader. It shows them where the character is coming from and why whatever action is happening turns them on so much. To me one of the greatest things about spanking, as a topic and activity, is there there’s such a vast range of motivations. You could watch, say, two men get spanked by two women. Both have their hands above their head, standing against a wall. Both women use the same black paddle. To an outsider, the scenes look the same, but maybe one is being “punished” by his mistress, and maybe the other has never been spanked before, and is curious. Or maybe he’s usually the top and they’ve decided to switch. You never know, and by telling the story in an engaging way, we can find out.

Interview by Em and Lo at Daily Bedpost

August 28, 2008

Over at Daily Bedpost, Em & Lo interviewed me all about spanking, everything from my favorite toys for spanking to punishment and roleplaying and more – check it out:

What would you say is the emotional appeal of spanking?

Gosh…to me, spanking strips away so many of the outer layers of protection I have around my emotional core, in a way that even sex doesn’t always do. When I’m being spanked, I’m so in the moment; all I care about is when the next smack is coming and how it feels and whether I’m doing a “good job” of being a spankee. It’s such a rush and it brings out all my needs to be wanted and praised. And when I’m spanking someone, I’m always just in awe that they’ll let me do that, let me go there; it often gets very heated (in both senses of the word), very fast. For a lot of people, getting spanked is a way to be vulnerable and let go. In my story in Spanked, the protagonist wants to cry during her spanking; I think people cry from being spanked not so much because it hurts per se, but for the same reason people cry sometimes after sex–it’s so powerful their body just needs an outlet.

Thomas S. Roche is the author of several hundred published erotic short stories as well as work in the horror, crime, fantasy and science fiction genres. His published books include four anthologies of horror/fantasy, three books of erotic crime-noir, and three erotica collections. He blogs and podcasts on sex, drugs and cryptozoology at Thomasroche.com, as well as writing for Blowfish.com and Techyum.com.

Tell us a little about yourself that’s not in your official bio.

I am not a morning person, but I seem to write best early in the morning, probably because I’m not awake enough to realize how absurd the enterprise is. I now try to get up at about 5:30 so I can get 3 hours of writing in before work. It is insane, and I would rather sleep in, but it is too easy to let time pass without doing a serious amount of writing, just because the day job gets in the way. Also, my favorite Scotch is probably Balvenie and my favorite bourbon is Jim Beam.

What inspired your story “Pre-Party” in Spanked?

I occasionally write stories about what might have happened had situations from my real life been slightly different, and “Pre-Party” essentially follows that model. I attended a pre-party in the Noe Valley neighborhood of San Francisco for the Folsom Eve Ball a couple of years back and it was filled with all these amazingly hot, sexy people in extremely revealing fetishwear. Unlike other parties I’ve attended, there was no play there, other than the occasional swat on the ass following a “Hey, does that handmade Peruvian whip have a lot of thud or more sting?” — “Here, let me show you!” — which tends to be more friendly than erotic, really. None of the characters are based on the people at that party, but the general situation was inspired by it.

Your story has the added touch of a vibrator being used during the spanking: “He gives it to her, right on the sweet spot, knowing from experience that the burst of sensation is going right into her clit, or her cunt, or her asshole, or something, some magic part of her that’s going to get her off, especially with the vibe buzzing
crazily.” Was that a deliberate choice to mix things up a little? How does the toy change the spanking dynamic for them?

When I’m writing erotica, I always feel a bit guilty about making it too easy for the characters to climax. For me it’s part of the format or the genre — if everything isn’t at least a bit easier than it is in real life, then erotica doesn’t serve its escapist purpose for me. But I can’t go too crazy with everybody coming all the time all over the place with no effort, or I start to feel like it’s not so much sex-positive as sex-bullshit, like bad ’70s porn novels.

So I wanted to insert a vibrator (ha ha ha) to bridge that gap between turn-on and climax. That particular variation is also not that far from reality for me. Spanking and vibrators are unquestionably two great tastes that taste great together. It adds the intensity of the vibratory stimulus alongside the deep, thuddy-stingy sensation of spanking. In my experience, with many women the thud is what can lead to a spanking-induced orgasm, and since it’s a very different feeling than the buzz of a vibrator, it’s really fun to mix those up.

Why do you enjoy writing spanking erotica? How do you keep the topic of spanking of interest to you after writing so many stories about it?

I think spanking is hot for me because I was influenced very early with Victorian or neo-Victorian erotica, where spanking was one of the serious obsessions. Then I did spanking and discovered that it’s just packed with intense experience. There’s the power exchange aspect, the taboo, the pleasures of easy access, humiliation, intimacy, and lots of bodily contact — I could go on. Suffice it to say that spanking is a lot of wonderful pleasures rolled into one.

Every time I sit down to write erotica, it feels brand new to me based on the obsessions I have at that moment. It’s very much like having sex for me, in that respect. I think some people who contemplate writing their 10,000th description of a woman in a short skirt imagine that it would be boring, but writing’s such a sensual experience for me that it doesn’t really feel that way.

However, if I let myself write erotica about things that bore me to tears, I will definitely interfere with that experience, which is why I tend to return to the same themes, and spanking is one of them since it’s a personal obsession.

And how many, in your estimation, have you written by now?

Spanking stories, probably twenty or thirty at least. Stories overall, a few hundred, of which probably three-quarters are erotica…I keep a database but am terrible about updating it, so I’m not totally sure of the exact count.

Is there anything different for you about writing spanking erotica vs. other kinds of erotica?

Spanking as a ritual is usually very stylized with me. Spanking erotica has to be fairly limited in scope to work; I feel like I have to keep the focus narrow in order to sensually do justice to the experience of spanking.

As a reader, do you have a favorite spanking erotica story?

Tragically, in recent years I’ve had to more or less stop reading erotica because I get the same things from reading it that I get from writing it, and if I read it I don’t write it. But I do sometimes read Zille DeFeu’s blog (http://zilledefeu.wordpress.com/) and go berzerk. Zille likes the spanking. Nonfiction is more of a turn-on for me than fiction when it comes to spanking.

I remember intense spanking scenes from Victorian erotica that I read when I was young, but I honestly have never tracked them down in recent years. In many ways I prefer to replay them in my mind.

I do like spanking comics, when I find them, but I don’t really enjoy spanking DVDs. Watching spanking on DVD, so far, is for me kind of like watching paint dry.

What’s next for you?

I’m blogging pretty frequently at www.thomasroche.com, but I rarely blog about sex because I work in sex for my day job AND I teach sex ed twice a year at San Francisco Sex Information (www.sfsi.org) and have for ten years, so I have to explore other obsessions or I think I’d explode. At Thomasroche.com, I write about whatever interests me, but I tend to return to themes of history, politics, cryptozoology, pulp fiction, Victoriana, and genre movies. All of these things are showing up in the fiction I write lately, but so far none of them have added
up to any publishable erotica.

As for fiction. I’ve been focusing on horror and fantasy and crime fiction again, which is where I started back in the ’90s. For the first part of my career (1989-1993) I sold about 10% of what I wrote; then from 1993-2007 I sold 90% of what I wrote, and now I’m back to selling 10%. The reason is that I’m trying to focus on new formats and styles, and I’ve given up on trying to move stuff quickly. I’m interested in creating a much larger tapestry.

Erotica sort of came along as a path of least resistance for me, because everything decent I wrote (and most of what I did) was always about sex. But supernatural horror, science fiction and other types of imaginative fiction really constitute my first love, though I often cheat with crime fiction. So I’m enjoying going back there. Which doesn’t mean there won’t be spanking.

Below is an excerpt from Thomas’s story “Pre-Party.” Read the whole thing inSpanked: Red-Cheeked Erotica.

“What are you doing?” she whines meekly. “We’ve got to get to the party.”

The cornstarch on her thighs is lost to sweat and friction, so the stroke of the rubber up her legs is not quite smooth, but it’s worth it when he snuggles the formfitting panties over her sex, then tucks the vibe into it and squeezes.

“Oh Jesus fucking Christ,” she says, and a few other things, considerably louder, as he climbs onto the bed and drags her bodily over his lap, smearing the remnants of his come over her latex dress and not caring, pinning her wrists with his left hand while with his right he does something he knows she’s wanted since the first time he playfully smacked her ass in the kitchen, around three, when she protested weakly that she had crudités to slice.

He pulls up her skirt and exposes her ass for a spanking.

“The guests,” she says, her voice all bleating desperation as he rubs the crotch of the rubber panties, forcing the vibe against her clit so that she gasps. Then he draws back and his cupped hand comes down hard on one firm cheek of her ass. She utters a yelp, grinds her hips against him. The vibe visibly jiggles around; even in the tight rubber panties, it can’t stay absolutely still. He brings his hand down again, feeling the taut clench and the give of her asscheek. This time she doesn’t yelp; she moans.

He adjusts the vibe and lifts his hand. This blow makes her whimper, softly, as she fucks herself slowly and rhythmically against his lap, rubbing the vibe between her clit and his thigh while she presents herself, ass high, for his next blow.
He gives it to her, right on the sweet spot, knowing from experience that the burst of sensation is going right into her clit, or her cunt, or her asshole, or something, some magic part of her that’s going to get her off, especially with the vibe buzzing crazily.

He starts spanking her faster, a blow every other second, one cheek to the other, then both, then her pussy, careful not to smack the vibe—that would hurt, and worse yet, it might break the damn thing. She’s moaning and bucking, and he’s let go of her wrists because she needs them to claw at the bed. His hand’s in her mouth now; she’s biting his palm, hard, as he spanks her rapidly, adjusting the vibe every dozen strokes or so to make sure it’s right where it’s supposed to be—on her clit, making her come.

Spanking erotica interview with Madlyn March

August 4, 2008

This is the latest in my Spanked: Red-Cheeked Erotica author interview series. Here are the others:

Madlyn March is the pseudonym of a writer whose work has appeared in the anthology First-Timers, Black Table, AfterEllen, AfterElton, Complete Woman, The New York Post, Time Out New York, and others. Toni is based on a bully who once tortured her, but the sexual part is all wishful thinking.

Tell us a little about yourself that’s not in your official bio.

I once met Andy Warhol, but I was too young then to know how cool he was. I also used to want to be a dancer. I took lessons and everything. But I gave it up when I discovered writing.

What inspired your story “Reunion” in Spanked?

“Reunion” was mainly inspired by a high school crush, though I didn’t know it was one back then.

When I entered the ninth grade, a really pretty girl entered my class. She had beautiful eyes and super long, super curly brown hair. (Her name was Elizabeth, by the way.) I didn’t know I had a crush on her, because I didn’t know I was gay. I just thought I wanted to look like her.

My arch rival was a girl who lived in the same building as me. She’d been torturing me forever. When she got to know Really Pretty Girl, Really Pretty Girl stopped being my friend. I suspect Arch Rival badmouthed me. I also suspect Arch Rival was gay (she was really butch) and that she had a crush (as I did) on Really Pretty Girl.

Looking back now, I see that Arch Rival may have been threatened by my friendship with Really Pretty Girl because she wanted RPG for herself. Arch Rival may have also wanted me for herself as well.

When I sat down to write “Reunion,” I wondered what would happen if I one day met Arch Rival and we decided to get together sexually.

Lena is also based on another friend of mine that I had a crush on.

You did an excellent job of building up the long-simmering tension between the protagonist, Elizabeth, and her high school bully, Toni, which ultimately culminates in a spanking. I like the idea that there probably was an attraction buried beneath the surface between them way back when, but it only shows up at the reunion. How does the spanking help them exorcise those demons?

Well, first off, thank you for that compliment.

Secondly, you are right. There was an attraction between them way back when, on a subconscious level. Their demons were that they both liked the same girl and that kept them from seeing each other as potential (and more realistic) romantic partners. And Toni’s demon is also that she tried to take Lena from Elizabeth. Toni and Elizabeth can’t get together now, until the past is dealt with.

Spanking lets them do that. Spanking lets Elizabeth exact revenge for the past and Toni repent for it. Some may say Toni wants to be spanked, so she isn’t exactly suffering. But I think there is something about a spanking, where even if the person wants it, it still feels like a punishment. Maybe because we were all brought up to see it as so.

So the spanking, just by its very nature, is a way for Elizabeth to get revenge and a way for Toni to feel she has apologized. But Toni is also apologizing by doing something nice sexually for Elizabeth, by allowing herself to be Elizabeth’s plaything. And Elizabeth is showing she’s forgiven Toni by giving her sexual pleasure.

Elizabeth gets her revenge on Toni also by withholding the spanking at certain points. By withholding the spanking, Elizabeth lets Toni know the rules have changed since they were younger. Elizabeth is in control now and Toni has to respect that.

Ultimately, Toni is enjoying her spanking every bit as much as Elizabeth enjoys delivering it to her. Was it a challenge for you to work in each person’s pleasure in this arrangement?

No, that was not a problem. I like to give and I like to get, so I could easily envision myself as both characters. (Maybe I should have put that in the official bio?)

I also liked that Toni is a butch but clearly a bottom, and she
provokes Elizabeth deliberately into spanking her. Were you trying to
sing the praises of butch bottoms?

I wasn’t trying to do that consciously. This was me just fantasizing what I’d do if I ever met that bully today, and I knew I’d be the one doling out the punishment. I also wanted Toni to be able to apologize for what she’d done, and Elizabeth to give out a punishment to Toni, and having Elizabeth be the top and Toni be the bottom seemed the best way to do that.

But I’ve always liked the idea that a butch is not necessarily a top and a femme not necessarily a bottom.

People are people and they don’t always conform to rigid stereotypes. So maybe that got in there subconsciously.

You also point out that just cause someone’s into spanking doesn’t mean they’re into everything about spanking. “My last lover, Mimi, was fun, but frustrating. She loved to spank me, which was a problem, as I prefer being the spanker. We didn’t break up over that, but it made the sex—at least for me—much less satisfying than it could have been.”

This shows that for some people, they are pretty much only into spanking or being spanked. I was also glad to see you get into the pleasure of spanking someone, because I think the joy of that side often gets lost when we’re talking about spanking. What do you think Elizabeth gets out of spanking other people, and, specifically, Toni? Why is it exciting for her?

I think Elizabeth gets out of spanking other people what I get out of spanking other people. I like spanking because I like giving pleasure.

There’s also something fun about spanking someone the way you want to be spanked, envisioning yourself getting the same spanking they are getting. When you’re spanking, you’re allowed to see pleasure on someone else’s face (and behind) but you can’t get that pleasure for yourself. It’s just out of reach. So that’s very exciting.

I also think Elizabeth likes spanking because she’s a bit of a control freak (as am I).

What’s exciting for Elizabeth about spanking Toni is the fact that finally she gets to exact revenge on her, but also she finally gets to act on this deep-seated, long-simmering attraction. It’s the combo of both those things that makes this spanking more highly charged than if it were just your run-of-the-mill spanking between a long-term couple.

You said in your bio that Toni is based on a bully who once tortured you. Would you ever want to get revenge in the same way your protagonist does?

Interesting question. I would–but only if the bully actually wanted to talk to me and proved herself a nicer person now. But I couldn’t just go up to her and start spanking her. We’d need to have many, many conversations before that took place.

Is there anything different for you about writing spanking erotica vs. other kinds of erotica?

Not really. To me, the rules of writing erotica are the same no matter what fetish the story features. Remember, first of all, that you are telling a story, so character development and plot should be there. In my opinion, the sex should be there for a reason–it leads the characters to an emotional point in their lives. And you shouldn’t write about anything that doesn’t get you personally hot or you won’t get your readers hot.

As a reader, do you have a favorite spanking erotica story?

I actually haven’t read much spanking erotica. In this book, my favorite stories were Shanna Germain’s “Perfect Bound” and your story, “The Depths of Despair.” I liked Shanna’s because it had a woman who looks like a strait-laced librarian but she’s actually very naughty. I’m a sucker for stories like that. And yours was a favorite because it was much deeper and darker than most erotica is; it really breaks a boundary and that’s always good for erotica and fiction in general.

What’s next for you?

More erotic story submissions, reading my story August 21st at In the Flesh, a novel (maybe, if I can ever finish it), and perhaps some more non-fiction.

Here’s an excerpt from Madlyn March’s story “Reunion.” Read the whole thing in Spanked: Red-Cheeked Erotica.

“All right,” I said, a few minutes later. “I think you’re ready for what I have to give you next.” She dutifully unzipped her pants. “Lie back on the ground,” I said as I rummaged though my bag, wondering what I could use to restrain her and to hit her. Ah. Perfect.

“Ass up,” I said, as I pulled her hands back with my ponytail holder.

I hesitated for a second. Was this right? Would I hurt her too much? It seemed strange to care, considering what she had done to me. But she seemed like such a nice person now, and I didn’t want to do anything that would be too—

“I bet you still hate me for taking Lena from you, huh?” she asked.

Suddenly, I stopped caring about whether what I was doing was right or not. She obviously wanted me to be rough. There was no other reason why she’d bring Lena up after all this time. She was trying to make me as mad as possible so I’d hit her hard. God, she must be dying for a good spanking. Well, she would just have to wait. Wait and suffer.

“No, I don’t hate you for taking Lena,” I lied, gently massaging her bare ass with the back of my metal hairbrush. “But I bet you wish I did. I bet you’d like to feel the sting of this. It’ll really hurt when it hits that ass of yours. I’ll whack you so hard, your clit will feel the vibration for days.”

She was breathing loudly. So was I. We were frozen like that for two whole minutes, both terrified and excited by what was to follow.

Then I made good on my promise. Hard.

“Unngghh,” she groaned.

I stuck my fingers under my panties and began fingering myself. When I felt she could take a second hit, I whacked her even harder. And again. And again. The hardest metal hitting the softest skin. Over and over. After each whack, I touched my clit, taking myself just to the edge but not over. I whacked her until those pale globes turned bright red. I whacked her until I was almost ready to come myself. I wanted to put myself in the same place she was: Dying to have an orgasm, but not wanting to end the exquisite torture. Not yet, anyway.
