Spankings with wood vs. leather

August 27, 2008

Over at Matt’s Spanking Blog, he has a post up about wood vs. leather. I honestly don’t get spanked often enough to have made a true comparison, but I like what he has to say:

Both have their purpose. We fantasize about wood, we imagine control, inarguable orders that must be followed. And then we discover that what we want is the idea of control, the image in our mind that never fails us, combined with the caress of our body in slower, persuasive, tailored strokes – the slowly building fire that coaxes our physical responses, that gives us time to react and absorb.

And sometimes we need more – early and after. Sometimes our bodies have to be pushed rudely into matching our mental state, sometimes they have to be controlled and directed. Sometimes we want the lasting undeniable physical memory of deep soreness, of sharp renewed pain. And sometimes we’re too sensitive for that.

Wood reminds us when we move, when we act, when we try to do something. Leather reminds us when we stop, when we relax, when we try to do nothing.

How can we be expected to choose?

Debra Hyde on her spanking limits

August 21, 2008

Writer Debra Hyde, of the long-running, kink-friendly, fabulous blog Pursed Lips, on the Spanked virtual book tour:

Through the years, many of my spanking discoveries defied my expectations. I learned that I personally can’t take the pounding hand spankings I’ve seen others take. Oh, I warm up just fine to those preliminary slaps, the ones meant to warm the skin and prep the flesh. But up the ante into full-fledge mode and you’ll find me at my physical limit in no time. It’s fine for an over-the-knee quickie (and I do enjoy pressing my belly against my superior’s erection during the agony), but no one has been able to figure out how to escalate a hand spanking so I can find blissful ecstasy in it. Or maybe I’m so sensitive that trying to get me there takes so long that it’s like watching paint dry.

Paddle me while I’m in blue jeans, however, and you’ll have me in heaven in no time. Dang, but doesn’t that feel good! And, if the friction’s right, I’ll get the spanking equivalent of rug burn. Yum!

I’ve found that for all the sting I can’t handle, I take a certain amount of thud just fine, thank you very much. The cane is exquisite torment. The paddle, trying. Especially if you use the spike side. (Beware: skin breaks damn easy. Which is fine with me, but if you’re taking my cue and bringing it to a partner, make sure you’re both prepared for it.) The flogger, the quirt, the single tail. I love to hate them all. And hate to love them as well.

Four paddles I’d like to be spanked with

August 20, 2008

Inspired by blogger Essin’ Em, who said that this paddle from EdenFantasys is her favorite one to get spanked with, here are a few I found at EdenFantasys that look super fun. Soon I’ll tell you all about the very public spanking I took at my reading at TES on Saturday – that was a first for me! Click on the images below to be taken to EdenFantasys to buy them or get more info.

Hands, canes, and other spanking toys

August 4, 2008

from Cigi’s World, an excerpt from a post about various spanking implements:

Even when I wear a skirt for a certain Top I play with, the first thing he does when he gets me over his knee is lift up the skirt and spank on my panties.

Once the hand spanking is over and the toys come out that is a fun part. Most of the Tops I play with have a considerable amount of their own toys, both homemade and purchased. But I also have my own toy bag, consisting mostly of leather but with some wood. I have a few toys that were gifts from beloved Tops (like the heavy strap that I have finally gotten worn in just where I want it) and the paddle that was given to me by a Top who knows I will never allow anyone to actually paddle me with it, him included. But most of the toys in my bag were made by one person, a kind man who lives in Florida and makes the best leather toys in the galaxy. I also have a wonderful razor strap that I recently purchased and am the proud owner of 2 more canes.

Canes are my favorite toy. Once I was introduced to the exquisite pain of this beautiful instrument, there was no going back. I loved everything about it. The first sharp and painful impact and the second delicious wave of pain I call the “afterburn”. Now, I like to be caned hard but not brutally. The cane can be brutal in the wrong hands and you can absolutely cut someone to ribbons if you don’t know what you’re doing. You can also send someone to heaven if you do it right. I think the cane gets a bad rap in spanking circles. People see the cane and think of angry English schoolmasters or Singaporean justice. This isn’t so nor does it have to be. Yes, you can cause damage with the cane, but you can also fall in love for life with it, as I have done.

Interview with John of Leather Thorn Paddles

July 24, 2008

I used some of the Leather Thorn Paddles in the Spanked book trailer and let me tell you, they are a lot of fun! Painful, kinky fun. 🙂 Many thanks to Stacie Joy for her help in facilitating and transcribing this interview all about John’s custom paddles.

How did you get into the paddle-making business and how long have you been doing it?

I owned a custom leatherworking shop, created and provided supplies for horses and riders, made and repaired tack equipment, saddles, and chaps. Whatever someone wanted that was crafted from leather, I made for them. (For instance, gun holsters, knife sheaths, checkbook covers, purses, and cell phone cases.)

A friend of mine saw some leather paddles and straps for sale on eBay one day, showed them to me, and said, “You can do better than that!” I looked at them, drew up some patterns, and started making paddles. That was about eight or nine years ago. The business has taken off since then, mostly by word of mouth. I have to say thank you to all the bloggers who have, for years, been featuring my products and services.

Please tell us a bit about your paddles, both what they’re made of and how you craft them.

They are made out of cowhide (number 1 hide, skirting leather—the same leather they make custom saddles out of). I make all the paddles, straps, and tawses myself. Everything is cut and tooled by hand. I use a special sewing machine to sew through thick layers of leather. This is a one-man operation!

How are your paddles different from other paddles on the market?

For one thing, I have a different handle design, made to better fit your hand. I use a built-up handle I designed for a more comfortable grip. I offer most of my work in many different colors and styles, and have a choice of handle colors. I customize each paddle to the person who will be using it. For example, is the person left-handed or right? That makes a difference in the placement of the design.

Also, I offer custom work, which most people do not. If someone wants something different than my standard lineup (something longer, wider, a different pattern, or design), I can do that for them. If they have a design in mind, I make it to spec. There haven’t been too many things I can’t create or craft.

Additionally, I am the only one I know who offers patterns on the spanking implements. I use a basket weave or diamond pattern mostly, although I offer other patterns. I will even make up a new pattern if someone has a request or idea.

My company, Leather Thorn Paddles, offers a “Name That Paddle” contest every year, where contestants (anyone with email access can enter) offer up names for one of my newly created paddles, and the winner gets that paddle, free of charge.

Which one is most popular and why?

Well, that’s a tough question to answer. There are a few best-sellers, and they seem to rotate. The ones that are consistently the most popular are the Small Rose Paddle, the Rose Blush Paddle, and the Turntail Rosy. Most of my customers (about 75%) are women, and they seem to like the rose designs best. I think they prefer nice-looking or aesthetically pleasing designs. A lot of women like that my paddles come in other colors besides black, and they appreciate the look that the natural leather and custom designs provide.

You do custom paddles, as seen on your website. What’s the most unusual custom paddle you’ve created?

That’s another tough question, Rachel. I’ve had some unusual design commissions: I had one woman that wanted a tree-bark pattern with a heart on it with her initials plus her man’s initials in the middle, just like it had been carved it into a tree.

Another woman wanted a yellow-and-black cartoon bee (complete with stinger) on her paddle. One man wanted a padded paddle, made with soft sheepskin on one side.

I’ve put all sorts of designs on paddles: four-leaf clovers, angel wings, and wolf faces. I’ve made matching sets: his and hers, little and big, twin swingers. I’ve made different patterns on the implements themselves: camouflaged (mossy oak) patterned-paddles, and barbed-wire–patterned straps.

I’ve also made breast bondage cuffs, ankle and wrist cuffs and restraints, hogties, and bondage belts. I can make them in almost any color or style the customer wants.

What do you like best about creating Leather Thorn Paddles?

Meeting the people who use the paddles. I’ve met a lot of nice folks, some of whom I am still in contact with. By “meet” I mean via email and telephone; I haven’t actually met too many people in person. I enjoy being able to craft special items for people, and then getting an email or letter telling me how much those people love the results—it makes my day! I really like the challenge of making new, unusual, and different items for people, not the same old black leather paddles that are for sale everywhere else.

Rose Blush paddle from Leather Thorn Paddles

Is there a paddle you’d recommend for someone new to being spanked, as well as for someone who’s done it a lot and can take something more powerful?

The Rose Blush Paddle [pictured above] and the Imp Lament are perfect for beginners. They have rounded, smoothed edges (and are edged and polished/burnished) and can deliver a nice mild spanking (although they can also pack a wallop if you aren’t careful). It’s all in how you use them.

For your experienced players: the Brat Loop [pictured above]. You take a walk on the wild side with that item. You can really set someone’s ass on fire with one of them!

The Tawses can also provide some serious stimulation: I offer two, the two- or three-fingered standard tawse, and the new, American Tawse [pictured below]. Again, it’s all in how you use them, but thinner straps generally provide a more potent sting.

I deserve a spanking

July 14, 2008

I think I need a spanking for bringing this super pretty paddle (that I got in London years ago) to the vbook trailer shoot and then thinking I’d forgotten it (I didn’t see it in my big bag). Whoops. It would’ve looked so pretty. We got some great shots, but still.

From the set of the Spanked book trailer shoot

July 14, 2008

The Spanked book trailer debuts later this week. It was a lot of fun to shoot (and the spankings I gave and got after it!) and I’m very excited about it. Also, Spanked: Red-Cheeked Erotica is officially published! My publisher has copies and it should be shipping from Amazon any day now. If you want one right this minute, order directly from Cleis Press.

Here’s a photo of me on the set, and here’s one of some of the implements we used (many paddles are from Leather Thorn Paddles).
