“Spanking is the New Black” by Madlyn March

August 15, 2008

A guest post by Madlyn March, author of “Reunion” in Spanked: Red-Cheeked Erotica.

This article, published a few days ago in the European paper Wales on Sunday, looks at the increase in the popularity of erotic books, especially those that feature spanking. Hazel Cushion, who publishes erotic books via her company Accent Press, thinks the rise in popularity is due to the whole Sex and the City effect. I’m not so sure about that, considering Carrie wasn’t an erotic fiction writer, but rather a writer of sexy non-fiction, which, in general, is more accepted than erotica. Still, there’s no denying the show made everyone a little more comfortable with sex in general.

Cushion says women like erotica books that have that “Sex and the City vibe rather than being all black and whiplash.”

This worries me, because I’d hate to think there’s only going to be one accepted kind of erotica out there–the safe, chick-lit type. If erotica gets a push into mainstream, all types of erotica–not just those appealing to straight SATC fans–should get that push.

Something else that’s interesting about this article is the fact that Accent Press gets great distribution. There was a time when erotic books were relegated to dirty bookstores in Times Square. These days they can be found in such upscale, general-interest bookstores as Borders. Erotic books can even be found in libraries these days, something unthinkable years ago. But buying erotica is still somewhat taboo, so it’s no surprise Cushion’s books are particularly popular on the Internet, hitting number one on amazon.co.uk.

The article also once again opens up the whole “women like dirty words/men like dirty pictures” debate that has been going on forever. Cushion believes it’s true, though as a woman, I have to say, I don’t mind a dirty picture here and there, and I think others would agree with me.

One thing that fascinated me was Cushion’s statement that older women like her books a lot. This flies in the face of our stereotype of the older woman being less sexual than the younger one. I’m glad to see that’s not true, as I never really believed in that stereotype, anyway.

Another stereotype Cushion busts: “Some people confuse spanking with wife beating and domestic abuse but it is not. It is all down to the woman and what she wants.”

Cushion is publishing a spanking non-fiction book called The True Confessions of a London Spank Daddy.

“…Spanking is very popular,” she tells the paper. “In fact, I’d say spanking is the new black. I didn’t know there was so much interest in it.”

Cushion makes an excellent point about spanking being as controversial today as being gay was many years ago. And she links feminism to spanking: “…Women have been so pushed into feminism and this idea they are equal, and some of them – often ladies with high powered, managerial jobs – want to give control to someone else.”

So it’s not so much feminism itself that has given rise to spanking, but feminism’s effects–more women having the kind of high-stress, high-responsibility jobs that men have always had. All day long women tell people what to do, for their jobs, so when nighttime comes, they want to be dominated. I can see that, as it’s probably been true of men in high-powered positions for years.

Cushion also agrees with the judge’s decision in the Max Mosley case, to award him 60,000 pounds.

The Spank Daddy book will be a Channel 4 (UK TV) documentary. Perhaps it will come here via Showtime, or some other outlet? We can hope.

Anyway, a fascinating article overall. Cushion is really quite the powerhouse. What other erotica publisher has met the Queen for her contribution to Britain’s business world?

Madlyn March is the pseudonym of a writer whose work has appeared in the anthology First-Timers, Black Table, AfterEllen, AfterElton, Complete Woman, The New York Post, Time Out New York, and others. Toni is based on a bully who once tortured her, but the sexual part is all wishful thinking.

Tell us a little about yourself that’s not in your official bio.

I once met Andy Warhol, but I was too young then to know how cool he was. I also used to want to be a dancer. I took lessons and everything. But I gave it up when I discovered writing.

What inspired your story “Reunion” in Spanked?

“Reunion” was mainly inspired by a high school crush, though I didn’t know it was one back then.

When I entered the ninth grade, a really pretty girl entered my class. She had beautiful eyes and super long, super curly brown hair. (Her name was Elizabeth, by the way.) I didn’t know I had a crush on her, because I didn’t know I was gay. I just thought I wanted to look like her.

My arch rival was a girl who lived in the same building as me. She’d been torturing me forever. When she got to know Really Pretty Girl, Really Pretty Girl stopped being my friend. I suspect Arch Rival badmouthed me. I also suspect Arch Rival was gay (she was really butch) and that she had a crush (as I did) on Really Pretty Girl.

Looking back now, I see that Arch Rival may have been threatened by my friendship with Really Pretty Girl because she wanted RPG for herself. Arch Rival may have also wanted me for herself as well.

When I sat down to write “Reunion,” I wondered what would happen if I one day met Arch Rival and we decided to get together sexually.

Lena is also based on another friend of mine that I had a crush on.

You did an excellent job of building up the long-simmering tension between the protagonist, Elizabeth, and her high school bully, Toni, which ultimately culminates in a spanking. I like the idea that there probably was an attraction buried beneath the surface between them way back when, but it only shows up at the reunion. How does the spanking help them exorcise those demons?

Well, first off, thank you for that compliment.

Secondly, you are right. There was an attraction between them way back when, on a subconscious level. Their demons were that they both liked the same girl and that kept them from seeing each other as potential (and more realistic) romantic partners. And Toni’s demon is also that she tried to take Lena from Elizabeth. Toni and Elizabeth can’t get together now, until the past is dealt with.

Spanking lets them do that. Spanking lets Elizabeth exact revenge for the past and Toni repent for it. Some may say Toni wants to be spanked, so she isn’t exactly suffering. But I think there is something about a spanking, where even if the person wants it, it still feels like a punishment. Maybe because we were all brought up to see it as so.

So the spanking, just by its very nature, is a way for Elizabeth to get revenge and a way for Toni to feel she has apologized. But Toni is also apologizing by doing something nice sexually for Elizabeth, by allowing herself to be Elizabeth’s plaything. And Elizabeth is showing she’s forgiven Toni by giving her sexual pleasure.

Elizabeth gets her revenge on Toni also by withholding the spanking at certain points. By withholding the spanking, Elizabeth lets Toni know the rules have changed since they were younger. Elizabeth is in control now and Toni has to respect that.

Ultimately, Toni is enjoying her spanking every bit as much as Elizabeth enjoys delivering it to her. Was it a challenge for you to work in each person’s pleasure in this arrangement?

No, that was not a problem. I like to give and I like to get, so I could easily envision myself as both characters. (Maybe I should have put that in the official bio?)

I also liked that Toni is a butch but clearly a bottom, and she
provokes Elizabeth deliberately into spanking her. Were you trying to
sing the praises of butch bottoms?

I wasn’t trying to do that consciously. This was me just fantasizing what I’d do if I ever met that bully today, and I knew I’d be the one doling out the punishment. I also wanted Toni to be able to apologize for what she’d done, and Elizabeth to give out a punishment to Toni, and having Elizabeth be the top and Toni be the bottom seemed the best way to do that.

But I’ve always liked the idea that a butch is not necessarily a top and a femme not necessarily a bottom.

People are people and they don’t always conform to rigid stereotypes. So maybe that got in there subconsciously.

You also point out that just cause someone’s into spanking doesn’t mean they’re into everything about spanking. “My last lover, Mimi, was fun, but frustrating. She loved to spank me, which was a problem, as I prefer being the spanker. We didn’t break up over that, but it made the sex—at least for me—much less satisfying than it could have been.”

This shows that for some people, they are pretty much only into spanking or being spanked. I was also glad to see you get into the pleasure of spanking someone, because I think the joy of that side often gets lost when we’re talking about spanking. What do you think Elizabeth gets out of spanking other people, and, specifically, Toni? Why is it exciting for her?

I think Elizabeth gets out of spanking other people what I get out of spanking other people. I like spanking because I like giving pleasure.

There’s also something fun about spanking someone the way you want to be spanked, envisioning yourself getting the same spanking they are getting. When you’re spanking, you’re allowed to see pleasure on someone else’s face (and behind) but you can’t get that pleasure for yourself. It’s just out of reach. So that’s very exciting.

I also think Elizabeth likes spanking because she’s a bit of a control freak (as am I).

What’s exciting for Elizabeth about spanking Toni is the fact that finally she gets to exact revenge on her, but also she finally gets to act on this deep-seated, long-simmering attraction. It’s the combo of both those things that makes this spanking more highly charged than if it were just your run-of-the-mill spanking between a long-term couple.

You said in your bio that Toni is based on a bully who once tortured you. Would you ever want to get revenge in the same way your protagonist does?

Interesting question. I would–but only if the bully actually wanted to talk to me and proved herself a nicer person now. But I couldn’t just go up to her and start spanking her. We’d need to have many, many conversations before that took place.

Is there anything different for you about writing spanking erotica vs. other kinds of erotica?

Not really. To me, the rules of writing erotica are the same no matter what fetish the story features. Remember, first of all, that you are telling a story, so character development and plot should be there. In my opinion, the sex should be there for a reason–it leads the characters to an emotional point in their lives. And you shouldn’t write about anything that doesn’t get you personally hot or you won’t get your readers hot.

As a reader, do you have a favorite spanking erotica story?

I actually haven’t read much spanking erotica. In this book, my favorite stories were Shanna Germain’s “Perfect Bound” and your story, “The Depths of Despair.” I liked Shanna’s because it had a woman who looks like a strait-laced librarian but she’s actually very naughty. I’m a sucker for stories like that. And yours was a favorite because it was much deeper and darker than most erotica is; it really breaks a boundary and that’s always good for erotica and fiction in general.

What’s next for you?

More erotic story submissions, reading my story August 21st at In the Flesh, a novel (maybe, if I can ever finish it), and perhaps some more non-fiction.

Here’s an excerpt from Madlyn March’s story “Reunion.” Read the whole thing in Spanked: Red-Cheeked Erotica.

“All right,” I said, a few minutes later. “I think you’re ready for what I have to give you next.” She dutifully unzipped her pants. “Lie back on the ground,” I said as I rummaged though my bag, wondering what I could use to restrain her and to hit her. Ah. Perfect.

“Ass up,” I said, as I pulled her hands back with my ponytail holder.

I hesitated for a second. Was this right? Would I hurt her too much? It seemed strange to care, considering what she had done to me. But she seemed like such a nice person now, and I didn’t want to do anything that would be too—

“I bet you still hate me for taking Lena from you, huh?” she asked.

Suddenly, I stopped caring about whether what I was doing was right or not. She obviously wanted me to be rough. There was no other reason why she’d bring Lena up after all this time. She was trying to make me as mad as possible so I’d hit her hard. God, she must be dying for a good spanking. Well, she would just have to wait. Wait and suffer.

“No, I don’t hate you for taking Lena,” I lied, gently massaging her bare ass with the back of my metal hairbrush. “But I bet you wish I did. I bet you’d like to feel the sting of this. It’ll really hurt when it hits that ass of yours. I’ll whack you so hard, your clit will feel the vibration for days.”

She was breathing loudly. So was I. We were frozen like that for two whole minutes, both terrified and excited by what was to follow.

Then I made good on my promise. Hard.

“Unngghh,” she groaned.

I stuck my fingers under my panties and began fingering myself. When I felt she could take a second hit, I whacked her even harder. And again. And again. The hardest metal hitting the softest skin. Over and over. After each whack, I touched my clit, taking myself just to the edge but not over. I whacked her until those pale globes turned bright red. I whacked her until I was almost ready to come myself. I wanted to put myself in the same place she was: Dying to have an orgasm, but not wanting to end the exquisite torture. Not yet, anyway.

Excerpt from Madlyn March’s story “Reunion”

July 9, 2008

Since I just posted the guest post by Madlyn March, I thought I’d share some of her excellent lesbian spanking revenge high school reunion story, simply called “Reunion,” from Spanked: Red-Cheeked Erotica. There’s something really devilishly fun about this story, and it’ll inspire anyone who was bullied in high school (or ever) to imagine getting to spank the one who tormented you.

While she stood there, I wrapped one arm around her waist and put the other down her pants. I fingered her cunt, torturing her until she was begging for release. Then I took out my hand and put it to my own cunt to give myself some much-needed relief.

Max Mosley, a British man who owns Formula 1 motor racing and is president of the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile, likes getting spanked. And while I’m not at all shocked to hear there’s a man alive who likes being hit, apparently others are very surprised. He is a businessman. He is a senior citizen. He is respected. He should not be into S&M. This is what is implied in the stories coming out about him.

And this is a major story in the English press. Spanking is not the only part of the story, but it is the part that–as usual–gets the worst press.

Somehow someone decided that because Mosley’s father was a fascist, and because Mosley’s spanking scenes involved hair-shaving and speaking German, that there must have been a whole Nazi aspect to them. Mosley denies there was a Nazi connection, saying he is simply not into that kind of thing. (He does not deny the spanking, which was recorded.)

But what if Mosley were into Nazi-themed S&M? While I personally find such a scene too horrific to even contemplate, I have to say I think everyone has the right to do what they want behind closed doors, providing it is legal. If Mosley wanted to pretend the girls servicing him were prison guards, or that he was the guard, that doesn’t make him a Nazi, or even anti-semitic. It just means he has kinky sexual tastes.

And though the British press may want to pretend this is not a common interest, there is some evidence to the contrary, including the two mainstream films released in 1974 with guard/prison kinkiness (Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS and The Night Porter, starring the very respected Dirk Bogarde). These films would never have been made if there wasn’t enough of an interest.

But 1974 was a far more permissive time, and today in 2008, News of the World, which is, in theory, supposed to be an objective newspaper, has no problem calling Mosley’s interest “sick.”

Thankfully, Mosley’s lawyer reminds us all how common spanking is, as The Daily Mail reports:

“[Mosley’s] barrister told the judge: ‘It’s not a surprise to me or to others who don’t live in an ivory tower or a monastery or, I am sure, to your lordship, that to learn that quite a lot of people, men and women, have a fascinated interest in this sort of thing.'”

People actually like spanking! Film at 11!

Of course, this isn’t news to anyone but maybe your Aunt Ida living in the Midwest.

Mosley is saying News of the World ruined his family life by reporting on the spanking. He’s been with his wife for over 50 years. She didn’t know about any of it.

I feel bad for his family and for him, especially as far as the whole invasion of privacy thing is concerned. Society has an odd double standard for spanking. Tell some friends you’re into it and you’ll probably get a sly smile followed by many questions. But if the press finds out you’re into it–and worse, speak German while doing it–you’re “sick.” Even Mosley himself felt the need to call his interest in spanking “unfortunate,” as reported in a Reuters blog.

Mosley felt his private life should have been kept private, but should spanking really ever be kept quiet if you’re a public figure?

I don’t think so. The less papers report on it, the more odd it seems. If it was reported about more often and–this is the key–more objectively, it might be seen as less controversial and may even make more people open to it in their own sex lives.

I think James Price, who is Mosley’s lawyer, has the smartest thing to say about the whole thing, in the Telegraph.

“Bottom spanking, whip fantasy and role play scenarios are an interest [Mosley] accepts he has had since quite a young age. Most people probably think that S&M behaviour — spanking of bottoms, whips and roleplays, doctors and nurses, Sheik and harem, guards and prisoners — are permissible and private and even funny. The News of the World, we say, is out of touch with the instincts of decent British people.”

(As an aside, I will just add: Can James Price run for president? Even though he’s British and not a politician, maybe we could make an exception?)

In The Daily Star, Mosley gives this defense of spanking and S&M:

“As far as I know, everybody who participates in it enjoys it. The people who are victims want to be victims although some women never take the part of the victim and are purely dominant, some do both and some are purely submissive.

It’s an individual’s choice and it’s the same for the men.”

The fact that Mosley was cheating on his wife brings up yet another point. Why did he cheat? Was it just because wifey was not into spanking? What does a spanking enthusiast do when a partner is not into spanking? Is it morally wrong to cheat in that case? Or do you get these things out in the open right away and abandon the relationship–which might be perfect otherwise–if the other partner isn’t into spanking? Unfortunately, I don’t have the answers, just the questions.

I’ll end on a bit of unintentional humor. The funniest part of the story is News of the World’s defense, (again, as reported in the Telegraph): The NOTW side maintained they were doing the right thing by publishing the story because: “whipping or beating someone until he bleeds is a criminal offence.”

Here are the links, with more info. British commenters seem pretty ok with Mosley. Not sure American commenters would be if this had happened in the US.
